Big Buddha & The Po Lin Monastery

Friday afternoon, Beth and I visited the Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha in Ngong Ping on Lantau Island.

Tung Chung road is a single-lane, windy road that cuts across Lantau Island. An suv waits for the road to widen to pass our bus.

The view from the back of the bus. Note how everyone is bracing themselves against the seats because the bus drivers are crazy drivers.

A restaurant in Tung Fuk.

The steer our bus almost hit in Tung Fuk.

The big Buddha statue can be seen along the ridge from the shores of the Shek Pik Reservoir.

There are 250 steps to reach the base of the statue.

The Big Buddha is 34 meters tall, making it the world's largest, outdoor, bronze, seated Buddha. Which makes me wonder how many other large, outdoor, bronze, seated Buddhas are there.

The Po Lin Monastery is situated among the mountains of Lantau Island.

Hikers descend toward Ngong Ping.

Beth stops for a picture on our way down the steps.

Incense at the Po Lin Monastery.

A worshipper burns incense before entering one of the buildings at the monastery.

The Buddha can be clearly seen from the monastery.
